Lightweight Construction – Safe, Resource-Efficient Solutions for the Future
Lightweight construction is a key technology for sustainability, climate protection, and resource-efficient innovation. Its central focus is the optimal, load-appropriate use of materials and manufacturing technologies. Accompanying material testing enables innovative, resource-efficient lightweight solutions and ensures safe use throughout the entire product life cycle – from raw material selection to lifetime monitoring of structural integrity and to dismantling.
BAM conducts research in the field of lightweight construction, among other areas, on polymer materials and composite components for wind energy systems, aircraft, and hydrogen storage; on lightweight concretes made from recycled demolition materials; on joining technologies for high-strength steels and new metal composites; as well as on additive manufacturing processes with increased material efficiency. In addition, BAM develops non-destructive testing (NDT) methods that are applied throughout the entire life cycle of lightweight structures—from quality assurance during production and condition assessment during operation to Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) during ongoing service.
