Description
In CopperDigital - Data ecosystem for digital material development based on ontology-based digital representations of copper and copper alloys - a demonstrator for a digital data ecosystem is being created. This is to be available to materials research and the metalworking industry as a future-proof digital platform.

Challenge

Metal filings with copper
The subject of the project is the development of an ontology-based data ecosystem for digital material development. Data structures are to be interconnected and information efficiently exchanged along the entire life cycle. This will make it possible to consider and evaluate interactions that have not been taken into account so far in the process of alloy development, such as between the alloy composition and material properties or process routes. The resource efficiency of a system for the production of certain alloys should thus be able to be estimated.
Objectives
The aim of the CopperDigital project is to develop a data ecosystem for copper and copper alloys that is applicable and usable for applications in industry.
Methods
The basis is the development of ontologies, i.e. knowledge networks. Ontologies serve as standards for the description of materials and technical processes.

CopperDigital - Data ecosystem for digital material development based on ontology-based digital representations of copper and copper alloys
The aim of the CopperDigital project is the exemplary development of a data ecosystem for copper and copper alloys that can be used and applied in industrial applications. This is to overcome the problem of "islands of expertise" in the respective domains.
An ontology-based data ecosystem for the digitisation of material development will be developed, which is built on decentralised data space instances. The functionality will be demonstrated using practical examples. In parallel, concepts for data structures, storage and exchange of materials data via interfaces to be defined will be developed.
BAM sub-project
The BAM sub-project contributes to various aspects of the overall project. In particular, the focus is on the requirements for the data ecosystem and the feasibility for the determination of mechanical parameters for the characterisation of semi-finished product properties. The results of the work should be useful for accredited mechanical testing laboratories, among others.
BAM ensures that the ontology development conforms to standards. This is essential for industrial users. In the BAM sub-project, the relevant mechanical characteristic values are determined in the digitalisation of the demonstrator process "alloy development" as an example.
