Student (w/m/d) for master thesis in the field of elemental trace analysis

The Division Inorganic Reference Materials (Berlin, Adlershof) is seeking a student for a bachelor/master thesis on:

Study of interferences on elemental analysis by plasma ion source mass spectrometry

Project description

Elemental trace analysis has a wide range of applications: from detecting toxic pollutants in water and consumer products to predicting mechanical properties of hard alloys. Contamination of certain elements —even at trace or ultra-trace levels— can lead to serious health problems or defects in materials. In collaboration with the industry, we develop new instruments and methods for elemental analysis based on atomic mass spectrometry. The proposed project aims to study the fundamental properties of an instrument's prototype— concerning detection capabilities, sensitivity, spectral interferences, and matrix effects.

We offer an application-oriented research project and direct contact with industry partners. The student will learn to operate a high-tech instrument and get hands-on experience in an analytical laboratory. Experimental work will be carried out in the facilities of the Division Inorganic Reference Materials at the Adlershof Campus. We will provide state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, a creative and supportive working environment, and access to the BAM network.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in chemistry or related subjects
  • Experiences in the field of instrumental analysis/analytical chemistry are an advantage
  • Interest in application-oriented research
